The Langley Xtreme 2001 Rep B Softball team captured another 1st place medal this past weekend in the 2015 Maple Ridge May Madness U14 Fastpitch tournament.

The first game of the tournament saw the Xtreme come out strong vs the Tri City Titans 02. Piper French and Jacqueline Hudson teamed up to pitch a No-hitter to lead the Xtreme to a 16-0 score. French also lead the offence with 5 RBI’s in the game including a Home Run and Kaitlyn Cowie tripled with 2 RBI’s.

In the second game, the team faced the Maple Ridge Rage 02. The team seemed to not have a lot of energy, but as all good teams do, they found a way to win. Kayla Michael and Sam Cox lead the scoring with 2 runs each to lead the Xtreme to a score of 12 – 3. The team next faced their rivals the Maple Ridge Rage 01.

With a bit of rest between games, the Xtreme came out firing and jumped out to a 5 – 0 lead after 2 innings. Ashley Preston had a 2 out single that plated 2 RBI’s and Sierra Miller also had a hit and RBI and a run scored. With 2 out in the bottom of the 5th inning and the tying run on 3rd, Jayna Hagen made a spectacular diving catch in center field to preserve the win as the Xtreme team narrowly beat the Rage 01 by a score of 7 – 6 to maintain their perfect round-robin record.

On Sunday morning, the team was back at it early to meet the PoCo Ravens 02. With seven runs in the first three innings, the Xtreme 01 left no doubt about the eventual outcome. Jordan Quechuck lead the way with a hit and 2 RBI’s and Kaitlyn Cowie had another strong game at the plate with a Triple and Double in 2 at bats. The final score of 13 – 3 gave the Xtreme the 1st seed in the playoffs due to their 4 – 0 record in the Round Robin.

Next, the Xtreme faced the Richmond Islanders 01/02 team that just came off an emotional win by beating a team from Bellingham, WA to make it into the playoffs as the 4th seed. The Xtreme knew they would be tested early and had to get an early jump on the Islanders if they were to advance to the finals. Eleven runs in the first three innings allowed Xtreme 01 to put the game away early. The offence was led by Taryn Jenkins who cracked a Home Run to left-center and brought in 3 RBI’s. Nadia Hudson was 1 for 2 with an RBI and run scored to assist the Xtreme 01 in a 12 – 2 romp over the Islanders. With the win the Xtreme were off to the Finals.

After finding some shade at the park in Maple Ridge on a hot Sunday May Long Weekend afternoon, the Xtreme faced the Rage 01 in the finals. The Rage were coming off 2 hard fought wins versus the Surrey Storm in order to get in the final so the Xtreme knew they had to come out strong and get out front early. The Xtreme did exactly that and came out fast out of the gate leading 7 – 2 after 3 innings. Rebecca Courneyea had a key 2 out single that scored a run. However, the Rage battled back to tie the game 7 – 7 heading to the bottom of the 5th inning. With 1 out in the 5th inning and Jenkins on 3rd base, coach Rob French pulled off a play that we thought we would never see. He called for a suicide bunt to see if he could squeeze another run across the plate knowing that time was short because of the 1 1/2hr time limit. Jordan Quechuck executed the play with perfection and the defence was not expecting the play as Jenkins scored to give the Xtreme a 9-7 lead. With the inning over and a 9-7 lead, time had expired and the Xtreme 01 were Champions of the May Madness tournament.

The team once again went undefeated in the tournament with a 6 – 0 record. The team now heads to Kelowna May 29 – 31 to another tournament to see if they can remain undefeated in tournament play and bring home yet another GOLD medal.

Thanks again to Coach Rob French and Assistant Coach Bill Cox and Bench Coach Holly French to another successful tournament and thank you to all the parents for their support.
